Creative Spaces for Cooks

January 31st, 2011

My mother’s work in the kitchen helped me recognize that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Thanks to friends and family who generously opened their kitchens and recipe files to create more than just a cookbook. Keep watching and I’ll give you a sneak peek into many of the kitchens that I designed.

Kitchen from my last personal residence.

Being sold at Alice Lane Home Collection (Provo), Three French Hens (Salt Lake), Plates and Palates (Bountiful), and Indigo Sage Gallery (Ogden).

International Builders Show

At the International Builders Show in Orlando Florida:

  • Old ideas are new again
  • Timeless design/classic details never go out of style
  • It is better to be simpler than complex, yet details are very important

These ideas are exemplified in the ‘New American Home’ that was on display:

Notice the proportion of columns to trellis

Fireplace with a beautiful metal insert in the stone. Also note how the display shelves are set back from the fireplace face.

The panel moldings have the same banding effect as the great room fireplace. Panel work continues on the doors. Continuity is important when there is a lot of detail.

Even the detail in the ceiling was consistent with the rest of the home.

In the kitchen banding detail continues in hood and backsplash.

Banding detail continues right down to the countertop edge.

Now notice the combination of banding and circles. I hope you've noticed that the vertical surfaces are detailed the same and all the horizontal details have the same design.

The pop up feature of electrical outlets in the kitchen countertop was genius!

Utah Style & Design

Working with Utah Style & Design has been a great experience. I was excited to start the year off right with a feature in their Winter 2011 issue. This issue is one of my favorites. The variety of design elements from kitchens, new construction and remodels are exemplified so well. Make sure you pick up a copy!

Welcome to my blog! This is where I’ll share my design ideas, interior decorating tips, favorite projects and great finds. Think of it as a little inspiration from my home right into yours. As far back as I can remember I’ve been interested in architecture and design. A little out of the ordinary for a junior high kid to take samples from construction sites and model homes. My first home plan sold while I was still in high school and I’ve been running at full speed ever since.

If you are a current client, I’m happy you now have a place to follow me. If you are new to my architecture and design, welcome.

Together we can structure your creative space for thoughtful living. Feel free to leave comments and share your thoughts.
