The excavation and beginning foundation for the Eco House in Springdale is coming to life! This home is at the mouth of Zions Canyon. The lot and its surroundings area are so beautiful! During excavation the crew had to be careful not to disturb the existing natural features. When I was designing the home I positioned it on the lot strategically as not to disturb large rocks, trees, and a natural wash.

I love to make a space feel as much like home as I can. I was adding some finishing touches to Bridgeport to give it more of a custom feel and thought I would share a bold DIY project. I had our painter paint a “rug” right onto the dining room floor.
It’s a daring move but as easy as measure, tape, paint!!
I am also having the ceiling wallpapered to add dimension to the space and personalize the home.
The lots are so beautiful with the temple in the background!

Last week I was in beautiful Huntington Beach, California! I visited a few model homes in a complex that features the most current design ideas. Here are a few samples of what I saw:
A unique idea to combine the breakfast table with the island.
Notice the soffit detail above the cabinets. It projects 1.5" beyond the face of the cabinet doors.
Anchoring the range as a focal point with glass doors is one idea for cabinets when they have a dominate color.
Note the Aquatic theme in both the pictures and pillows. This helps in a small space by not cluttering with too many prints.
Punches of color continue to be a popular theme. Here you can see the high contrast and accent punch of tangerine.
Notice how the mat around the pictures coordinates/matches the bedspread.
Here the art work is framed to coordinate with the size of the furniture to create a focal point in the room.
The pictures in this room are also scaled well to the size of the furniture.

I had a request to see a residential project that I had designed using JayDee Barr Construction as my general contractor. I designed this residence with many custom architectural elements and detail. You can see much of the custom wood work in the photos below and understand the value of a great general contractor in a residence of this scale.

A good general contractor makes my life easier! You have hopefully seen the amazing Herm’s Inn. I wanted to give a shout out to JayDee Barr Construction. They were such an important part of my team. They have great follow through and are detail oriented. They can build what I’ve drawn and are great to ask questions if needed to clarify and make sure that what I’ve designed is what is truely built. They are the general contractor that understands he’s not an architect. And I mean that as the highest compliment!!
I have worked with them on residential, commerical and hosptialtiy projects. They were also my geneal contractor for the Cache Valley Electric Building I designed a couple years ago and I was equally impressed with their work.

Herm’s Inn is officially open to the public! My first post was just over a year ago and I hope you have enjoyed following it from the ground up. I would of course recommend you visit in person… but for those of you not close enough, you can see interior pictures here.
I have been to Herm’s Inn countless times over the past year to work on architecture and interior details and check on its progress. It is so fun to see it now, filled with customers and food!
I was impressed with the the very fresh flavorful food. The service was great and I am already looking forward to my next meal there! I am happy it is close enough to frequent. My compliment to the chef…..I had the BLT and would recommend it! Mike Gouch recommends the club!
Herm’s Inn is located at 1435 East Canyon Road in Logan, UT and is open 7am-2pm daily.
This Henry Walker model home is open Monday through Saturday from 11 to 6pm. To give this home a more custom feel I used stripes of paint in the great room. The 5 metal frames above the mantle mimic the 5 panel doors to add cohesion to the space. (The bottom frame has outlets for a flat screen.)

I carried the accent paint color into the kitchen, painting the hood and the back of the glass cabinets. An easy DIY update for any kitchen with standard white cabinets! Adding the pop of color behind the glass adds instant personality to the space.
